XV The Devil
This is another
one of the early cards I painted and it has a lot of personal
meaning to me, as perhaps you have a Devil that does too. There
is one aspect to him that I used to paint all the time, but do
not anymore. That is the somewhat anachronistic helicopter
blades you see just under his/her chin and around the neck.
One of my
longest recurring nightmares was helicopters, mostly just the
blades. In fact, I can credit much of the reason I paint to
them because painting them purged them from my system for a
time.
Over the years, and with changes in my life, the meaning of the
helicopter blades shifted subtly, but in general they always
represented to me freedom, or lack thereof. In nightmares
they would attack or trap me, chase me, and sometimes replace my
head, making me little more than a robot with some biological
material still attached.
This Devil did the trick (and major changes in my life no doubt
did too) and I have not dreamed of them in 5 years.
The Devil is a nemesis, a prison, what haunts us, tempter,
oppressor, master of illusions and teacher. When you finally
learn to see, the illusion melts away.
