II The High Priestess
This is the second card I painted after the
Emperor. How different she is from him! Faceless and cold,
standing alone in the dark waters.
Having just given birth myself only months before
painting this card, she was the perfect receptacle for all of my
feelings of awe and mystery about the feminine nature.
Especially important symbols in this card were the number 2; the
towers or pillars behind her which magically appear in the Roman
numeral II and how it resembles a doorway and even a cervix.
Her feminine aspect of the prime duality and association with
the moon, as opposed to the masculine sun.
To me she is the dark mother, the empty but
fertile oceans and seas, the womb of all creation, the void, the
abyss. A shell which contains nothing but allows everything to
grow.
