VIII Justice
Ma’at is a very ancient Egyptian Goddess or personification of
the concept of Order from Chaos. She is involved in every stage
of justice, law, order, and balance; from controlling the
movement of the stars and mapping the course for the chariot of
the Sun across the sky, to weighing of the hearts of the dead
against her ostrich feather..
Without Ma’at all of creation would slip back into a state of
chaos.
The counterpart to the concept of Ma’at, imbalance, injustice,
and everything bad or chaotic was called Isfet and was
personified by the dragon/serpent/snake-like demon Apophis. In
this painting Ma’at keeps him in mind through the snake on her
arm.
Again, many of these concepts are dependant of your own
perceptions, who is really to say what is good and bad? The
very act of creation is also an act of destruction and vice
versa.
The tension between Ma’at and Isfet keeps us in a constant state
of evolution and growth. It is a source of motivation on every
level.
