Progress of the Queen of swords

The first hint of an idea. Working on the composition. Refining the anatomy.

This is where I transferred the sketch to illustration board.  This is called the underpainting stage where you establish values of light and dark.  On larger paintings I will do this in oil or acrylic, in raw umber, violet, or black, but on smaller works like this will use pencil.  I added some color to the eye in photoshop to see how it might look later on.

Added the other raven.   Huginn and Muninn?

Detail.

Added the landscape, the tree, and some other birds in the air which I didn't like at all and took back out after this scan.  I liked that area looking completely bleak.

This is after the first wash of burnt umber which gives me a nice midtone to work on.  The stormy sky has been painted in.  10/30/05

(Davy's Grey, Mars Black, Zinc White)

Here we go again!  The last one died for lack of gesso and so I am starting over.  Here is the new one 11/8/05.
